40th Anniversary Press Conference

CEO Sarah Romain and Director Corporate and Human Resource Unice Romain addressing the press

The Seychelles Petroleum Company (SEYPEC) officially launched the celebrations marking its 40th anniversary during a press conference held yesterday. The meeting with the media served as an opportunity to reflect on the company’s journey, acknowledge the dedication of its workforce, and outline the extensive program of activities planned to commemorate this milestone.

A Milestone for Seychelles

Opening the event, SEYPEC’s CEO, Sarah Romain emphasized that this anniversary is not just a corporate celebration but a national one. Over the past four decades, SEYPEC has grown from a small local entity into a vital pillar of Seychelles’ economy and energy security. She highlighted the company’s achievements, its resilience through global challenges, and its unwavering commitment to serving the nation.

Ensuring a Steady and Secure Energy Supply

One of SEYPEC’s most significant accomplishments CEO Romain stated, has been the ability of the company to guarantee a seamless supply of petroleum products to Seychelles, regardless of external market volatility. At no point, she stressed, in its history has the country faced fuel shortages, a testament to the efficiency and dedication of SEYPEC’s team.

Beyond fuel security, Sarah Romain added, SEYPEC has played a crucial role in the country’s economic development. The company contributes significantly to the national budget through dividends paid to the government, customs and excise duties on fuel imports, and various subsidies. Over the last decade, CEO Romain said that SEYPEC has subsidized the price of LPG for households, maintained stable public transport fares by supporting the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC), and absorbed fuel transportation costs to Praslin and La Digue to ensure fair pricing for all Seychellois.

Expansion and Innovation Over Four Decades

The CEO reported that SEYPEC’s growth has been driven by continuous investments in infrastructure, operational efficiency, and diversification. The company has expanded its fuel storage capacity from just 21,600 cubic meters in 1985 to an impressive 188,000 cubic meters in 2024, strengthening national fuel security. Its LPG infrastructure has also developed, introducing lighter and safer composite cylinders for domestic use.

The company has established 21 bunkering points, CEO Romain explained, positioning Seychelles as a key maritime fuel hub in the region. Bunkering points are designated fuelling locations where ships can refuel, an essential service for the maritime industry. SEYPEC has also enhanced aviation fuel distribution by constructing an 8-km Jet A1 pipeline directly supplying Seychelles International Airport, ensuring efficient refuelling for airlines.

Commitment to Sustainability and the Future

CEO Romain mentioned that SEYPEC has embraced modernization by automating key processes such as LPG filling, tank gauging, and metering. The company has also introduced cleaner fuels, transitioning from kerosene to LPG, eliminating leaded fuel, and improving diesel quality. In line with global environmental trends, SEYPEC has implemented energy-efficient measures, including the installation of solar panels and LED lighting, to reduce its carbon footprint.

As SEYPEC embarks on its fifth decade, the CEO stated, it remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and national service. The company’s self-sustaining model ensures that every rupee generated is reinvested into infrastructure, projects, and national contributions, securing a strong and resilient future for Seychelles' energy sector. The 40th-anniversary celebrations will feature a series of events aimed at engaging the community, recognizing employees, and reaffirming SEYPEC’s role in the country's continued development. More details on these events will be shared with the public in the coming weeks.
