Household LPG supply remains stable - SEYPEC introduces precautionary distribution measures

The Seychelles Petroleum Company Limited (SEYPEC) reassures the public that the supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Seychelles remains stable, while confirming that a temporary measure has been introduced to ensure fair and orderly access to additional household LPG cylinders across the country.

In recent days, SEYPEC has observed an unusually high level of purchases of additional household LPG cylinders, likely linked to heightened concerns over ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their perceived impact on global energy supply chains.

While national LPG stocks remain secure, SEYPEC has taken the precautionary step of temporarily centralising the sale of additional LPG cylinders through its depots on Mahé and Praslin. This measure allows the Company to monitor distribution patterns more closely and ensure that supplies remain evenly available to households throughout the country. Under this arrangement, the normal exchange of empty LPG cylinders for filled ones at service stations and authorised retailers continues as usual, allowing households to maintain their regular consumption without disruption.

The centralisation of additional cylinder sales is therefore intended solely as a distribution management measure during this period of unusually high demand, ensuring that purchasing behaviour remains consistent with normal household needs.

SEYPEC emphasises that this measure does not indicate any shortage of LPG in the country. On the contrary, it is intended to prevent unnecessary stockpiling that could disrupt the balance of supply across the national distribution network.

‘As the entity responsible for the importation, storage and distribution of petroleum products in Seychelles, SEYPEC maintains constant oversight of national fuel stocks and supply logistics,’ SEYPEC CEO adds. ‘This responsibility is particularly important during periods of heightened global uncertainty affecting energy markets and international shipping routes.’

The Company’s actions he explains, are aligned with the broader national preparedness framework currently being implemented by the Government of Seychelles. Earlier last week, President Dr Patrick Herminie convened an Extraordinary Meeting of Cabinet to review the country’s readiness in light of disruptions to key aviation, energy, shipping and financial corridors in the Middle East. The meeting established a coordinated national monitoring framework aimed at safeguarding economic stability and ensuring continuity of essential services, including energy supply.

Within this context, SEYPEC continues to monitor petroleum product inventories closely and to work with national authorities and industry partners to maintain stable supply lines to the country.

SEYPEC therefore encourages members of the public to continue purchasing LPG according to their normal household requirements. Responsible purchasing behaviour helps ensure that the distribution system functions efficiently and that all Seychellois households can access LPG without difficulty.
